Get to Know Dr. Scott Poling
Dr. William “Scott” Poling believes that dental care should be completely personalized for every single smile, which is why he takes extra time with his patients to learn about their particular wants, needs, and concerns. He finds this approach not only leads to higher quality treatment, but more relaxed appointments as well—a big win-win! He can’t wait to welcome you and your loved ones into our practice, but first, you can start getting to know him by reading on below.
Why Did You Want to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Poling was a hospital corpsman in the Navy and deployed with the fleet marine forces’ second medical battalion during Operation Desert Storm. This experience led him to taking an interest in having a career in medicine. He eventually applied to medical school, but he was waitlisted. After beginning a master’s program in anatomy, he was placed with dental students, who enlightened him about the profession. He thought it sounded like a great fit for him, and as they say, the rest is history!
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
After serving in the Navy, Dr. Poling completed his BA degree in biology at West Virginia University. He then completed his master’s degree in anatomy at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, and he obtained his Doctorate in Dental Surgery at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2006. Immediately upon graduation, Dr. Poling moved to North Carolina and provided care for underserved children. He opened his own private practice in Burnsville, near Asheville, and for two years, worked as a National Health Service Corp clinician.
Dr. Poling considers himself to be a lifelong student in the pursuit of excellence. From 2006 through 2011, he attended the Dawson Academy, where he trained in cosmetics, complex restorative dentistry, and occlusal disease with an emphasis on occlusal harmony and TMJ health. In 2013, he received special training for the placement of dental implants through the Triangle Dental Institute in Durham, North Carolina, and he received a fellowship in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He received IV sedation training at Duquesne University, has been an Invisalign provider since 2014, and been involved in dental sleep medicine since 2014.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Poling presently lives in Mt. Lebanon with his wife Stephanie and their son Franco (named after the great Steelers running back, Franco Harris, of course!). He enjoys Steelers, Pirates and Penguins games, outdoor activities, and music, particularly musical theater.
